Rollers For Sale

Rollers are a type of machine intended to help compact surfaces quickly and efficiently, using a combination of weight, pressure, momentum and vibrations to ensure that an even finish is achieved.

There are various used roller options on the market, ranging from pedestrian models that require the operator to walk behind them rather than riding on board right up to full-sized double-drum rollers with a covered or enclosed cab for bigger projects.

Typically required for treating tarmac shortly after it has been laid to make sure that it is levelled off appropriately, a roller might also be used to flatten earth, gravel and other surfaces across a range of industries.

Manufacturers such as Bomag which specialise in the production of rollers will have models to fit into each segment of the market. And the working width offered by a roller is likely to be influential in determining which unit is right for you.

Small single-drum walk-behind rollers can start at 0.5 to 0.8 metres in width, while basic ride-on dual-drum rollers will weigh in at up to 2.5 tonnes and be around 1.2 to 1.5 metres wide.

The larger single- or double drum-rollers with cabs to accommodate the operator will feature working widths of 2.1 metres and above, with the weightier units also delivering increased compaction performance, reducing the need to carry out repeated passes to achieve the desired results.

No matter the size of the roller, if it is going to allow an operator to ride on board and control it, then rollover protection should be present. The most compact models may feature this as a frame which can fold out of the way as and when necessary, whether for storage and transport or simply to allow the roller into areas with limited access.

Single-drum rollers will feature pneumatic tyres at the rear, so when buying a used model of this kind you will need to check that there is a good amount of tread left on the tyres. Tyres may reduce compaction capabilities compared with double-drum models, but this does mean that the roller will have more traction at its disposal, which can be very useful when it is being deployed on slippery surfaces or on those with an incline.

Vibrating models can be lighter than alternatives which rely on dead weight alone to achieve compaction, so this may be an efficient option if the right unit is available on the used market. Some rollers allow for additional ballast to be added to achieve the necessary weight increase, with certain examples featuring variable fill levels so that they can cope with different materials and environments. Specialised models which rely solely on the use of multiple tyres rather than a metal drum are also available but are less commonly encountered on the second-hand market.

Finding a used roller is not difficult, but because there are many manufacturers and models to consider, it is sensible to streamline your search by picking particular parameters that you require a potential purchase to fulfil.

There are two distinct types of roller from Terex, with ride-on vibrating rollers being available alongside single drum rollers that... Read more
