Joseph Cyril Bamford opened his business in a lock-up garage in 1945 on the day his first son, the current chairman Sir Anthony Bamford, was born. While the initial product was a trailer, today JCB manufacturers a wide range of machine in 22 factories in the UK, Brazil, China North America, India and Germany. In 2011 the company achieved record sales of £2.75 billion through a network of 770 dealers across the globe.
JCB made its name with the backhoe loader and still claims market leadership with various versions produced in different factories across the world. Over the years the JCB backhoe has been joined by a large number of different product types right up to its heaviest excavator, the 46 tonne JCB JS460. However, the company has tended to concentrated on the lighter, higher volume end of the market and in 2011 it produced more than 69,000 machines.
One of its most successful products is the Loadall telehandler range which JCB claims is the market leader. In addition it builds forklifts, skid steer and JCB wheel loaders, tracked, wheeled and mini excavators as well as compaction machinery, articulated dump trucks (to 22 tonnes), utility vehicles, generators, lighting towers, power packs and attachments.
In 2004 JCB started manufacturing its own Dieselmax engines which are now used in 70% of the machines it builds. The Dieselmax is unusual in that it can meet the latest Stage IIIB (Tier 4 Interim) legislation without the use of exhaust aftertreatment. In 2006 two heavily modified Dieselmax engines set the world land speed record for a diesel powered car at just over 350miles per hour (more than 563km/h).
