Loaders are designed to cope with the collection and movement of many different types of materials in the construction industry, with different models taking on earth, gravel, sand and debris of all kinds. Whether they are used to clear areas of rubble or shift heavy objects over short distances, these machines are large, manoeuvrable and rugged. Buying a used loader means looking at the options available, working out which is best for your needs and then finding a model with features to match.

The most common type of loader is represented by the combination of a wheeled tractor unit with a front-mounted bucket operated by a pair of hydraulic boom arms. This set-up may not be especially suitable for digging, but when it comes to scooping loose materials in large quantities, a loader will be an efficient choice for the job. The front-mounted bucket on these models can often be removed and replaced with an alternative attachment, enabling loaders to take on a secondary role to move large pallets and other items with a fork, for example.

Overview

\WheeledWheeled loaders may be the most prevalent type of plant in this category, but you will also be able to find tracked loaders. Picking a tracked model rather than a wheeled one will grant you access to better off-road performance and traction, although fuel efficiency will be diminished due to the extra weight and operational noise will be increased. The smallest skid-steer loaders weigh in at just one or two tonnes each and are compact enough to handle hauling tasks for highway maintenance and other sectors where size counts.

Some loaders will feature a front bucket in addition to a backhoe at the rear, making them versatile and capable of digging as well as moving the excavated materials through this combination of systems. When buying a used loader, look out for damage to any of the hydraulic circuits, as any issues might worsen over time and need expensive repairs. Also pay attention to the tyres, the state of which may be covered in the seller's description. Worn tyres will eventually need to be replaced, but they may help when you are negotiating on price.

This will give you a better idea about the kinds of wear and tear to look out for when inspecting the vehicle before purchase. Loaders which have been used in the construction or waste industries may have suffered damage to the undercarriage and other exposed areas, so this all needs to be examined.
