Mini Excavators

Mini excavators - or mini diggers - come into their own when a full-size hydraulic digger would be incapable of operating in a particularly cramped or narrow space. They are also a more affordable alternative to larger machines that would be overkill for the kind of work that is intended for them. And mini excavators do not all adhere to the same specifications - they occupy a number of size, power and price brackets on the used market. So for digging soil, lifting loose material and general maintenance, these compact pieces of mobile equipment are just the job.

Long reach excavators have to account for the fact that the additional length will require a heavier counterweight attached to the body of the machine to ensure that it is balanced and stable. And when you are buying a second-hand long reach excavator, you will find both models that are designed and built from the ground up for this purpose, as well as those that have been adapted to offer longer reach than was originally intended.

The challenge facing a long reach excavator is the need to offer excellent levels of stability even when the arm is extended a significant distance from the body. This is where they differ from high reach excavators, which means that buyers need to ensure that they do not get the two types of vehicles confused, as the specifications and performance of equipment in these categories will vary.

Overview

\LongYou can even find very specialised long reach excavators which are built to be entirely amphibious, ensuring that they can operate on land or the water without requiring any modifications. They can be the perfect weapon to deal with flooding and erosion.

What to Look for when Buying Second Hand

The most important aspects of a long reach excavator to consider when making a purchase are the weight, digging reach, digging depth and bucket size, all of which will determine the overall capabilities of the machine when it is deployed. At the lower end of the digging reach spectrum, models with arms that can cut 12 metres into the earth are available. Meanwhile, the very largest models can offer 30 metres of reach or more, all of which of course has to be counterbalanced to ensure safety.

Cabins and Tracks a Must

All long reach excavators will feature full covered cabs for the operator. Tracked designs make them capable off-road vehicles, and comprehensive hydraulic systems on the excavation arm deliver impressive power to the bucket so that the extraction of material can be carried out right at the extreme limits of the radius.

Choosing a long reach excavator will require a buyer to establish how they want to use the machine as well as the environment in which it will be operating. This will determine things such as the length of the reach that is required as well as the kind of bucket size and load capacity that will be acceptable. Outdoor use in slippery, wet conditions can leave second-hand long reach excavators in need of maintenance, so check for the presence of a service history and the correct certification to ensure that a used model can be purchased with confidence and used for years to come by its new owner and operator.
