At the moment, anyone interested in a JCB telehandler will have to pick from more than 30 different models. And this number expands further when you consider the used market, which is home to various versatile machines from this respected manufacturer. Telehandlers, which are also known as telescopic handlers, combine the functionality of forklifts and cranes, utilising a single boom to lift heavy loads while also accommodating other attachments to mix up the functionalities that are offered. JCB makes telehandlers that are safe, resilient and competitively priced. So as a second hand prospect, one of their machines will be a worthy selection.

When it comes to fitting through tight access points and zipping around narrow sites, the JCB 516-40 is a welcome recent addition to the telehandler range. It has a diesel-powered Kohler engine, a rigid chassis and a drivetrain that is not only powerful but also efficient. In fact JCB even markets it based on the fact that it retains its value better than competing machines, meaning it is a good investment for those thinking about selling it on further down the line. It can lift loads up to 4 metres and haul a maximum of 1600kg using its boom. So for lugging pallets of bricks around building sites and coping well in slip conditions, the 516-40 will impress.

For buyers looking for full size telehandlers the JCB 531-70 will be an option that is high on the list of potential purchases. And with an engine that is 10 per cent more efficient than previous power plants deployed in this type of machine, it can deliver fuel savings that make a difference when budgets are tight. The instrument panel includes a large display with a high resolution panel to ensure plenty of detail is accessible to the operator. Backlit switches improve usability and the cab is positioned and sized so as to maximise the visibility.

A 7 metre maximum lift height combines with a 3100kg max lift capacity to make the 531-70 a telehandler worth watching. It even has advanced safety features, such as a weight-sensitive seat that will shut off forward and reverse gears when it detects that it is unoccupied to prevent accidents.

The Wastemaster range of teleloaders developed by JCB is a popular subsection of this category which includes models designed to work well in the waste management industry, although of course the versatility of this type of machine means that it need not solely be used by companies from this sector. The JCB 541-70 with its EcoMAX engine is a powerful and productive beast, with the latest version adopting advanced security features that make it a harder target for thieves. It also has an excellent amount of torque on offer for minimal revs, allowing loads weight up to 4100kg to be lifted to heights of 7 metres all without putting much strain on the machinery.

Any JCB equipment which has been cared for and used by a reputable operator will be a worthwhile second hand purchase for any organisation.
