Dumpers For Sale

Dumpers are a staple of building sites across the world, providing a reliably rugged and convenient platform for the transport of a range of heavy loads. Typically designed with a skip up front and the driver behind, modern models benefit from four-wheel drive and maximum payloads of six tonnes or more, depending on the model chosen.

There are some dumpers capable of accommodating up to 10 tonnes, with the tipping action of the front skip managed by hydraulics, while a diesel engine takes care of transporting the load across the site.

When it comes to safety features, dumpers may be fitted with a roll-over protection bar (ROPS) at the rear which acts as a protective element that shields the driver from injury should the vehicle be tipped on to its side. This type of frame is a regular feature of contemporary dumpers which are available on the second-hand market.

Typical Thwaites Site Dumper for saleFalling-object protection (FOPS) is also an option on certain models, so buyers should look out for this feature depending on their requirements. Furthermore, dumpers can feature warning lights mounted on the roll bars to ensure that they are visible to other users of the site, or indeed when they are taken on to the tarmac to travel short distances on public roads. While a dumper will usually be configured with four wheels, there are tracked dumpers available. These offer better performance across a range of surfaces but may be more expensive to buy and maintain.

Dumpers generally leave the driver open to the elements, with only the ROPS for protection. But there are models which come equipped with a full cab to make them a bit more convenient to use in inclement weather conditions. Official figures have shown that dumpers are a common cause of accidents across sites in the UK and further afield, which is why a thorough check of the safety systems and condition of any second-hand unit is necessary to ensure its acceptability as a potential purchase.

Perhaps the most important option to consider is the type of skip mechanism which is featured on the front. While straight tipping dumpers are available, many buyers will be on the lookout for swivel skip dumpers, which allow loads to be deposited at an angle that would otherwise be impossible. This is especially convenient when it comes to working in narrow spaces such as on highway maintenance, where there is little room to manoeuvre.

There is a range of major manufacturers involved in producing high-quality dumpers today, including companies such as Thwaites, Neuson, Benford and Terex. Tracked dumpers from Hitachi, Morooka and Mitsubishi can be found on the second-hand market, catering for larger loads and deployment in particularly tricky circumstances. Standard dumpers may feature rigid bodies, although a growing number of models are now set up with central articulation, which allows them to be manoeuvred with a greater level of control, as well as make turns within tighter areas. This is something to keep in mind when checking the availability of dumpers.

Further Background to Dump Trucks

The term dumper has become rather generic and is applied to some of the biggest and smallest machines in the plant world.

At the light end are the walk-behind/stand-on tracked and wheeled dumpers which are essentially mechanised wheelbarrows with a payload of a few hundred kilograms. These machines have become more popular with the introduction of manual handling regulations and are many times more efficient than a wheel barrow.

Perhaps the most common use of the word dumper is applied to the articulated site dumper. These sit-on machines feature four wheel drive and carry loads from 1 tonne to 10 tonnes but don’t usually afford the operator a cab for protection against bad weather.

Ride-on tracked dumpers are favoured in difficult or sensitive ground conditions where wheeled machines would get stuck or cause too much damage. Payloads on tracked dumpers go up to around 15 tonnes.

Bigger still are the articulated dump trucks (also called dumpers or ADTs) which are very popular in earthmoving and quarrying operations. These three-axle all-wheel-drive machines can carry loads of up to 45 tonnes.

At the heavy end are the monster rigid dump trucks which haul up to 360 tonnes of extracted material around the world’s biggest mines and quarries.

This means the list of ‘dumper’ manufacturers is extensive and includes, amongst others, Thwaites, Benford (now Terex), JCB, Caterpillar, Imer/Ihimer, Komatsu, Yanmar, Hitachi, Morooka, Bell Equipment, Astra, Cormidi, Liebherr, Wacker Neuson, Ausa, John Deere, Barford (no longer produced), Winget, Doosan, NC Engineering, Paus, Yamaguchi, Hydrema and Fiori.

Kubota Dumpers

Specialising in compact, tracked dumpers, Kubota offers vehicles which can carry small loads across rough terrain without breaking a sweat. Second hand models represent a worthy investment, especially if they are well maintained and appropriately priced. And with rubber tracks these models can be deployed in many environments, with capacities ranging from around 700kg to over 4000kg. The more... Read more

Thwaites Dumpers

If you are choosing a certain type of machine, it makes a lot of sense to consider a company that specialises in the type of plant you are looking for and Thwaites certainly fits the bill when it comes to dumpers. Thwaites dumpers are renowned for their quality. The company has been... Read more

Hitachi Dumpers

Hitachi dumpers were a common site on our construction sites from the late 1990s into the early 2000s. Not to be confused with the Japanese firm's rigid dump trucks, Hitachi dumpers abandoned the traditional dumper design for a far more robust construction. A traditional dumper usually has the dumping skip to the front of the machine and the driver seated behind on an open platform. The skip tends... Read more

Yanmar Dumpers

The Yanmar dumper family is a range of tracked dumpers, ranging from the 60 Series Standard at just 415kg, to the C50R-3C TV at a shade under six tonnes. You will also see them referred to Yanmar Carriers. As the baby of the bunch, the 60 Series standard has an operating weight of just 415kg but an impressive payload, for such a compact machine, of 600kg. The capacity of the dump vessel ranges...
