Benford was once one of the main construction plant manufacturers in the UK. It operated for more than 70 years from its base in Warwickshire, manufacturing a range of plant, including access platforms, compactor plates, dumpers and mixers.

They also made Benford fork lifts and Benford skid steers, along with the ME130 digger. The company was perhaps best known for its dumpers, and the range of Benford dumpers was really quite extensive, with some 50 models on the market at various times. The company also made about 20 different models of roller, including the TV, SP and 2 Series. Mixers, meanwhile, included the CT, CR, J Type and RG machines.

Benford DumperBenford also has quite a complex corporate history. The firm was founded by James Bennett and Harry Langford, who combined the start of the former's surname and the end of the latter's to come up with the name ‘Benford’. The company was quickly sold, though, to Walker Brothers, who were based in Walsall. Benford started making their famous dumpers in 1953, and they soon became a common machine on UK construction sites. The dumpers used axles that were bought from Land Rover and then converted for use on dumpers, and they also had double reduction hubs.

The company was sold again to the BM Group in 1986 and was then sold on to Powerscreen in 1998. Powerscreen was an aggressive company that was formed in 1966 and initially built conveyors and screeners for the quarrying industry. The company embarked on a major series of acquisitions in the 1980s, but by the time they bought Benford in 1998, they were already in trouble. Terex then bought Powerscreen in 1999 and acquired the Benford business as part of that deal. Since then Benford has remained part of the Terex corporation, and now all of Benford’s plant is sold under the Terex name.

If you look for used Benford plant today, you will find that most of what is on offer is the company’s renowned dumpers. These range from small one-tonne machines up to bigger nine-tonne dumpers, and they include features such as ROPS protection, hydrostatic drives, swivel and straight dumping mechanisms. There are still also a few portable cement mixers on the market.

Look carefully and you will also find some used Benford rollers for sale. These include small walk-behind machines but also larger double drum ride-on rollers, complete with reliable Kubota engines, ROPS protection, flashing warning beacons and heavy-duty drum rollers. There are also some double drum Benford vibrating rollers to be had.

Some used Benford equipment is now many years old, and it may not be possible to get an accurate and full service history. It is therefore up to the buyer to conduct as full an inspection as possible and satisfy themselves that the used plant is in good order. That said, used Benford construction machinery has always had a good reputation for being robust and relatively easy to service, and most spare parts are still available at a reasonable price from Terex or from third-party suppliers.
